Carob Powder

The carob tree (Certonia siliqua), grown extensively in the Middle East, produces a long pod which, when ground into powder, tastes much like chocolate. Unlike conventional chocolate, however, carob requires no additional sweetener to make it palatable, and is often richer in calcium with fewer calories and fat.

Carob powder has been utilized as an alternative to chocolate, as it is free from the stimulants caffeine and theobromine found in cacao. It is also naturally sweet and contains nutrients and minerals perfect for superfood recipes like protein bars, baked goods and more.

Carob powder can be substituted for cocoa powder in any recipe. Carob may also be used as a sugar replacement in cereals, snacks, and treats.

Carob is often used in energy balls or squares, with a base of dates, nuts and seeds.

Add a nice flavor to your smoothies! Pairs wonderfully with frozen bananas and mint leaves for a mock ‘chocolate mint shake’.
